Oppo I have the disease that plagues all of us and being all over the place when it comes to my next mode of transportation. Gas mileage isn’t a huge concern because I have a Saturn that’s my DD and for fuel economy.
My dad and I always wanted a truck but since his eyes are firmly set upon a Vette as his next vehicle he’s not getting one anytime soon. My dilemmna is that for some reason I’m under the notion that if I get a truck it has to be 4x4. I’m not much an outdoors person just yet, as a matter of fact never driven down a trail once but I’ve always wanted too. My other issue is I want to make a fast truck but still want to be able to haul goods when need be.
So Oppo which way should I go with the truck? RWD or 4x4? I’m looking at things around $13k and lower. Preferably anything from the mid 2000s up, extended/crew cab and MT if possible tho if the AT gets me moving quicker I may go with that. If you could please include a small explanation why I should choose one over the other.
Ford Lightning for your time.

I’m gonna put my vote for the Lincoln Blackwood or Mark LT. They’re just unique and cool.

If you want the best all-rounder possible, 4x4.
If you want something easier to mod, cheaper, faster, and are willing to put on good winter tires, throw weight in the bed and take it easy in the winter, RWD.

Does it snow where you live? If it snows a lot, there is a decent case for 4wd but you should get decent tires to match. If you’re just getting it to drive, S10/Sonomas are great trucks, there are aftermarket go-fast parts, and they’ll be very cheap. 2wd trucks will always be cheaper than 4wd trucks but that should be obvious.
Off roading can be fun but if you’ve never been, it’s best to go with people who have been before. One of my buddies almost always starts wheeling in 2wd and doesn’t engage the transfer case until he can’t move any more in 2wd. That being said, you can absolutely off road a 2wd truck, it’s a matter of trying to avoid things that will get you stuck and traction when you can’t avoid it (good tires are the key).

4X4 diesel with a legit tune. Fast and capable. For that price you could probably get a decent 2nd gen Cummins or LB7 Duramax.

In order to make those fast won’t I have to swap the engine with a V8? And I was thinking that if I tried off roading I’d get a beater truck off of CL for a few grand. I want to escape the beaten path but not too far just yet. We do get snow here in MD but I’ve driven in that stuff before with a empty work van, I think I can handle snow. Would get snow tires tho. Also I probably would drive the truck as much because I wouldn’t want any bad drivers sliding and crashing into me. So I think I’ll still use the Saturn for snow days.

Hmmmm that’s solid. I was looking for something under 100k preferably. I’ll have to expand my limitations. What new mileage cap would you suggest I set for the diesels?

Like @Racescort666 said, where you live can have a big impact. Also, what you’re doing with the truck will play a big role.
You say you want to haul goods. Well just about any truck will haul a decent amount in the bed, but are you actually intending to tow things too? RWD is definitely going to be ideal for towing.
But if you’re looking more to just hit the trails then 4x4 will likely be a better choice.
What do you really envision yourself doing in the truck?

I envision moreso of having a fun truck. More of a sleeper than anything else. Maybe a slight touch of off-roading but who knows? I may get caught with the off-roading bug and decide to go that route. Jordan has suggested possibly looking at diesels as they can be the best of everything. And as far as towing a trailer...no plans to do that. Not saying it won’t happen but it’s not really a deciding factor.

Well if you aren’t going to be towing anything major, I’d say a diesel is overkill. Yeah, they can definitely be fast, but they are primarily bought with the intentional to haul lots of weight (boats, race cars, trailers, etc).
It sounds like you’re looking for something that’d be considered fast on the road, very different from fast off-road. Which means I’d probably look more at RWD. You can certainly go 4x4, which would help if you get bit by the off-roading bug.
In terms of speed; Lightnings are pretty fun street trucks, but it’d end up being limited to just that. You really don’t need a V8 to be fast and have fun. I’m sure you could have plenty of fun in a V6 Tacoma, Ranger, or Frontier. Addition of a supercharger would certainly add to the fun. I knew lots of people in Arizona with little trucks that were “pre-runnered,” and they were insane amounts of fun. You can certainly go with a larger truck with a V8 though. A buddy of mine has a 2013 Tundra with a TRD supercharger, and holy hell is that thing fast.

I need to do more research on the smaller trucks. I know about the TRD SC Tacoma but never crossed my mind to supercharge the other platforms. I’ll definitely do some research on it. Would definitely be cheaper and since I’m not hauling anything might as well.

My dad is very happy with his ‘04 F150 FX4 crewcab automatic. Though he had to spend several hundred dollars to fix an issue with the phasers... and he’s taking it to a retired technician friend’s house to get all eight spark plugs changed. Stupid 2-piece design.
